History of SPHINX

Sphinx is a creature with the body of a Lion and the head of a man/woman. It is believed to be a Greek word. Most of us might have heard of the Great Sphinx of Giza. Ones who are reading about Sphinxes for the first time read on I promise you it is pretty interesting. For those of you who have only heard about it, you would be surprised to know that the concept of Sphinx is not just in the Egyptian mythology it also exists in Asia. For those of you who know both the facts I have a surprise for you in the end.
The Sphinx is said to guard temples or tombs (depending on where it is placed). The Great Sphinx of Giza is the most famous of the Egyptian Sphinxes. It is believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians in third millennium B.C. But still things like on whose model is the face built, exactly when and who built it is still a mystery. Many people have different arguments. Many Egyptologists believe that it was during the period of Pharaoh Khafra that the statue was built. But then later there was an argument that the statue was buried in the sand and that it was Khafra who excavated it. So that meant the Sphinx was there even before the reign of Khafra; probably a lot earlier than that. So who exactly built the Sphinx? A few people believed it was Pharaoh Khufu who built it. The first documented attempt at an excavation dates to 1400 BC, when the young Thutmose IV gathered a team and, after much effort, managed to dig out the front paws, between which he placed a granite slab, known as the Dream Stela. This contains the story as to why Thutmose started the excavation. He was resting in the noon near the Sphinx when in a dream he was promised the kingdom if he excavated the Sphinx. Ramses II also did an excavation later. The entire Sphinx was finally excavated only on 26 Dec 1925. Surprised? Continue reading. Sphinx was considered as the talisman of the Nile. The locals believed that the flood cycle depend on it. The Nile listened to the Sphinx according to them.
The original idea of a Sphinx is said to be Greek. According to Greek mythology the Sphinx is a lady with the head of a women and the body of a lion who stood guard to the city of Thebes. Anybody who crossed her had to answer her riddle. If they failed to answer it, she would eat them up. ( That was one intelligent Sphinx and a hungry one too!)

The concept of Sphinx exists in the South and South East Asia as well. Purushamriga depicted on the Shri Varadaraja Perumal temple in Tribhuvana is the Indian Sphinx. It is said to guard the temple. According to legend, it is said to take away the sins of the devotees when they enter the temple and to ward off evil in general. It is therefore often found in a strategic position on the gopuram or temple gateway. Male purushamriga guarding the entrance of the Shri Shiva Nataraja temple in Chidambaram is another example. Sphinx earns a place in the Buddhists beliefs a well. In Burma, the sphinx is depicted on the corners of Buddhist stupas, and legends tells how it was created by Buddhist monks to protect a new-born royal baby from being devoured by ogresses. There are sphinxes in many palaces as well. Sphinxes are also found in medieval churches.

Now comes the best part. Did you know that the sphinx has been associated with the U.S. Army Military Intelligence since 1923, when it was adopted as the insignia of the Military Intelligence Officers Reserve Corps. Since Sphinx depicts great wisdom and strength they chose it. Now how many of you all knew that? Interesting isn’t it? Now if you are telling me that you know that also then you are one big Sphinx fan.

PANDA-"Getting Endangered"

Imagine waking up in a bamboo forest of China. The mist of the clouds, hanging on the branches, and a Giant Panda looking back at you from a nearby tree!
These adorable Giant Pandas, however, are the rarest member of the bear family and among the world’s most threatened animals. Today, the Giant Panda’s future remains uncertain. There are only about 1000 of them left in the wild. Pandas do not have many offspring during their lifetime. They give birth to a single or two cubs at a time. Although the adults have few predators besides man, the cubs are very small and may be attacked by leopards. Another problem is their diet! Bamboo grows in large patches, and different types of bamboo flower in different years. Pandas must travel from one good patch to another to find food. Its forest habitat, in the mountainous areas of southwest China, is increasingly fragmented by human encroachment. Habitat loss continues to occur outside the protected areas, while poaching continues to remain a threat. The sustainability of these animals is very difficult due to the fact that Pandas have no desire to mate once in captivity.
The Giant Panda also forms the logo of the WWF. WWF has played a vital role in the conservation of these species by increasing their area of habitat, creating bamboo patches, patrolling against poaching and illegal encroachment, etc. Options are also available to ‘Adopt a Panda’ and help save them from extinction. Thus, a combination of science, innovation, and community support helps to find ways to save animals and their habitats all over the world. Together, we can make a difference!

The extinction of at least 500 species of animals has been caused by man, most of them in this century. Today there are about 5,000 endangered animals and at least one species dies out every year. The number is rapidly growing, some species becoming endangered without most of us even knowing it. One such species is the Giant Panda.

OIL SPILLING -"Affecting Ecosystem"

Crude oil and refined fuel spills from tanker ship accidents have damaged natural ecosystems in Alaska, the Galapagos Islands, France and many other places and times in Spain .

The quantity of oil spilled during accidents has ranged from a few hundred tons to several hundred thousand tons. Smaller spills have already proven to have a great impact on ecosystems, such as the Exxon Valdez oil spill

Oil spills at sea are generally much more damaging than those on land, since they can spread for hundreds of nautical miles in a thin oil slick which can cover beaches with a thin coating of oil. This can kill sea birds, mammals, shellfish and other organisms it coats. Oil spills on land are more readily containable if a makeshift earth dam can be rapidly bulldozed around the spill site before most of the oil escapes, and land animals can avoid the oil more easily.

Control of oil spills is difficult, requires ad hoc methods, and often a large amount of manpower . The dropping of bombs and incendiary devices from aircraft on the Torrey Canyon wreck got poor results, modern techniques would include pumping the oil from the wreck, like in the Prestige oil spill or the Erika oil spill.

LAMASA-"A Kitchen Craft"

Lamasa is a Spanish kitchen craft. It makes use of dough that can be moulded into different shapes. It can be used to make magnet holders, decorative pieces such as fruits, flower baskets, dolls, teddy bears, etc. This work can also be done on photo-frames, mirrors, jharokas, key-chains.
Ingredients used are Lamasa dough, moulds to give shape, craft scissors, ready-made pollens, magnets, m-seal, fevicol.
To make the dough, Mix 1 cup corn-flour, 3/4th cup fevicol, 1 teaspoon Zinc Oxide, 1 teaspoon Lime Juice and 1 teaspoon Glycerine in an aluminum vessel and heat it stirring continuously so that no lumps are formed. After about 5-7 minutes after the dough has turned smooth with no watery contents, remove from fire and place it on a plate greased with some oil-based cold cream. Make balls by greasing your hands with cold cream. Keep these balls separately in airtight containers. According to the requirement, add oil paint/food colors of your choice in a small quantity of dough.
Now that the dough is ready, you can use it for making shapes of your choice. Once the Lamasa artwork is completed and dried, add one or two coats of varnish which will give it sheen and act as a protective coat.

EDIBLE SILICON CHIPS

From the olden days of instigating drugs to patient and hoping that it gives the desired results, advancement in medical sciences have gone way beyond imagination and expectations. The recent development being the edible silicon chips. Developed by Proteus, a Redwood city, California company, the chip will be swallowed by the patient and it will assist in tracking whether the patient actually consumes the drug or not!Hold on, this is not all that it can do, there is more to it. The chip can also help to effects of the drugs which the patient consume and note the activities of it inside human body. What this technology has done to the world is, it has opened new doors in medical investigations and researches.Well, medical field seems to keeping in pace with the growth in diseases. On the technical aspects of this silicon chip, it sends signal to an external patch that will assist in monitoring essential parameters like temperature, heart rate, body angle and so on and so forth. These kind of innovations are becoming increasingly a necessity rather than an additional invention to counteract new diseases that seems to emerge almost daily from nowhere.

VACCINE FOR TUBERCULOSIS-"Vanderbilt doctors"

Vanderbilt investigators have cracked one of clinical medicine’s enduring mysteries and it is the tuberculosis vaccine. The current TB vaccine known as known as BCG (bacille Calmette-GuĂ©rin) no longer prevents the bacterial lung infection that kills more than 1.7 million people worldwide every year but it is still 80 percent effective against “disseminated TB” (TB infection in many parts of the body) in early childhood. BCG was made by weakening (attenuating) a strain of bacteria that causes tuberculosis in cows and that genetically is 98 percent identical to the human TB germ.
Kernodle and colleagues found that the TB vaccine has acquired some traits that make it less effective in evoking a sustained immune response. When they take away these traits, the TB vaccine induces stronger immune responses in mice.
In the current studies, first author Lakshmi Sadagopal, PhD, research instructor of Medicine, vaccinated mice with a modified BCG (genetically changed in three ways to reduce or eliminate the production of several antioxidants) and examined the immune response in the days following vaccination and later with a “challenge” dose of BCG. She found that, compared to BCG, the modified BCG induced greater cytokine (immune regulatory factor) production during the early phase of the immune response, more CD8 cell-killing T cells at the peak of the primary response, and more CD4 helper T cells during the memory phase. Modified BCG also produced greater recall immune responses and was eliminated better by the vaccinated host animal than the parent BCG vaccine, which might correlate with improved safety in humans.
The Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation has licensed the modification technology developed by Kernodle and colleagues.

TIPS FOR CHILD SAFETY

For all the development that humanity has seen, their commonsense is yet to see even a minor upwards drift. Take Child-Care for instance, especially when transporting them. Holding a child’s hand on or near road.. How many people do it in the right way? On or Near the roads, the child must be held away from the road i.e to the left of the holder when the road/traffic is to his right and vice-versa and the walk must always be opposite to the direction of traffic i.e facing it. Children tend to get suddenly attracted and run towards their object of attraction which can be on the other side of the road or on it, endangering him/her. So parents must ensure that they never let go of the child’s hands and also hold it tightly enough to prevent escape. This rule is never followed especially by newly married couples who are too busy fondling each other to make sure their child’s hand is held constantly. Thanks to “ultra road grip” tires and Disk Brakes, vehicles, especially buses and bikes with rash drivers on them, zoom past close to the pavement, so close their handlebars nudge our elbows. What if its a child’s head it nudges a little to forcefully next time? And the “Style Statement” Crash Guards with the appearance of a Bull’s Horns do pedestrians no good either.

Another aspect of child safety with connection to roads is sending children out to do minor shopping, etc. When sending out children, it must be ensured that they are of enough age. If there’s an insistent younger brother/sister wanting to accompany the elder-one outside, allow it only if the elder one is obedient and capable of ensuring their safety. Never send them to places which will require them to cross roads. When giving money, it shouldn’t be given in hand noticeably, give them enough change and a carry bag so that there is no need for them to wait for change and packaging and also avoid their concentration being diverted to ensuring the safety of the goods they purchased and are holding in hand. Giving money noticeably or making them wait unnecessarily outside shops will only encourage kidnappers and thieves. Be careful when giving tricycles to be ridden on colony or neighborhood roads, cause on the roads they may appear too small for car drivers to notice. Give STRICT and CLEAR instructions when sending children out and ensure there is a responsible adult accompanying children on tricycles. It would be very useful if slips of paper with full home addresses were left in the child’s dress pockets always, along with some money for emergencies to make a call home etc.

Children in/on vehicles is another such area of insufficient commonsense application. Little kindergarten kids and and growing teenagers returning form evening or early-morning tuitions sitting behind their dads scooter’s are dazed by the cool air blowing in their face and tend to fall asleep sitting., while their parent remains oblivious to this fact. School children in overloaded and fast auto-rickshaws, especially the ones near the corners are facing risky probabilities of falling out of the vehicle and onto the road. Children left sitting on cycles near a shop his/her father has gone to, is another common sight. This is perilous because even a vehicle moving fast near the cycle is capable of toppling it to one side. This is true especially in India and other 3rd world countries where even the use of cycles as “family” transportation is still prominent. Think about the seriousness of a head injury to a child from falling off the bike or auto-rickshaw or cycle. It becomes unimaginably horrific if there is traffic following right behind the child.

There is need for education in adults regarding child safety and even about the need for using commonsense properly. God save the Earth and Humanity.

RHINOPLASTY-"CHANGING TRENDS"

The nose occupies the central portion of face and is the most prominent part of it.A deformed nose draws attention to the face ignoring other facial features.Improvement in the shape of the nose significantly changes the whole facial appearance. No wonder even today Rhinoplasty is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery, the world over.

20 years ago when I started taking interested in Rhinoplasty Information, there were very few ENT units where this surgery was performed regularly.Today this operation is practiced routinely at many ENT departments. There is a definite change in patient profile as well.

Fineness Rhinoplasty is a precise plastic operation for improvement of less perceptible anatomic changes by delicate sculpturing reshaping and altering the minute anatomic relationship of the bony and cartilaginous nasal skeleton. The dynamics of healing has to be considered as well since a good looking nose on the operation table may not look so perfect in the last post-operative period if the changes during healing are not anticipated and compensated.

Proper patient selection is very important;an emotionally stable patient with not too thick or thin skin is a good candidate. The surgeon must refrain from suggesting the patient his idea of a good looking nose but listen carefully to his concerns and decide if what he wants is technically feasible.

BEST ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE

Market is flooded with so many Antivirus, Antimalware and Internet Security packages that it is difficult to find a genuinely effective one. There continues to be several arguments with regards to which is the best. Here is a fair review from my own experience.

The Best Three:

1. Kaspersky Internet Security.
2. BitDefender Internet Security.
3. Eset NOD32 AntiVirus.

You don't see several familiar names here...and that is what this article is all about.

It is natural to expect Techies of these nations (Russia and other other eastern European) are thus well aware of the tricks their fellow countrymen (the hackers) employ to create Trojans and viruses. They were best at detecting most kind of Malware. It should be no wonder if the best Anti-Virus Packeges too are from these Nations.

Just look at this-

Kaspersky Lab... a Russian company
Bitdefender......a Romanian Company
Eset.............a Slovakian Company

and it turns out indeed they are the best Antivirus companies.

Testing and Benchmarks.

No Antivirus can detect all viruses. This is a fact. Best Anti-Virus is one which detects most of them. We call this detection rate.

Kaspersky, Bitdefender and NOD32 have been consistently observed to have highest detection rates in the Industry. Many times more than 90%. While most of others have a detection rates of 80%-90% (Of Course this is arguable given there are several testings giving different results)

Kaspersky engine is used in other enterprise level security solutions and is regarded very high amongst Hackers.

NOD32 antivirus too is said to be used in Microsoft Internal Security.

Why are they not Popular?

Then comes an obvious question... If these three are the best why are they not so popular among general public? Answer: Marketing.

Norton and McAfee are two of the most popular Anti-Virus vendors. These are American Companies. Almost all of the PCs ,When bought ,are provided with a limited period version of these softwares. For example, all dell systems by default carry 15 month McAfee Security.

when his Antivirus expires, what an average guy does? He buys the same package for one more year. Often that is only brand he knows. This lead proliferation to not so effective Anti-Viruses in the market despite availability of better ones.

Conclusion

What appears good may not always be so.When security is your priority take an informed decision.

SECRET OF OIL PULLING

Oil pulling Therapy is a regimen that not many people have known about, until recently. You may have heard it pop up in various forums such as CureZone (and read many testimonials), and may have some inkling on what it involves, but I wrote this article so you will know all the details.Using this method, one could heal a lot of chronic illnesses, diseases, preventing the need for surgery or medication (that can cause bad side effects).
Now, let me get into the specifics of the method. Here is how one would do oil pulling:

1. Every morning, before eating anything, consume 1 tbspoon of cold pressed oil, but DO NOT actually swallow the oil! Slowly swish the oil in your mouth, sipping and sucking it through your teeth for up to 25 mins. Use a lot of saliva, and mix the two together often. Doing this will use your enzymes, which in turn will draw out harmful toxins out of your bloodstream. So make sure the oil isn't swallowed - it will absorb toxins.

2. Continue swishing. As you continue swishing the oil, it eventually gets much more thin, and even turns white. Spit out a little into the sink. If the color is not white, it means you are not done. So continue oil pulling until the color of the oil is white.

3. After you're done, clean your sink, because it may contain lots of harmful toxins that you just eliminated. People have actually taken small drops of the remnants, and view them under a microscope, only to view toxic substances.

Oil pulling will generally increase your metabolic rate, and thus your health. Another beneficial effect most people have is the curing of bleedy gums, and cleaner teeth. But of course, the main benefit lies in its restoration of health.

I've done oil pulling for over a few months, and at first I didn't really notice any benefits. However, after 2 months I can now attribute my lively energy, and my healthy digestion to oil pulling.

Here are some tips to keep in mind while oil pulling:

1) Do it the first thing before eating any breakfast. If you have any chronic ailments such as acne, or candida, you should do oil pulling more than once a day, but do it on an empty stomach.

2) Please do not swallow the cold-pressed oil while swishing. The oil will be contaminated with toxins as it draws it out. If you do swallow it, nothing horrible will happen to you - it'll just be eliminated through your bowels, but better not to swallow.

3) The best oils to do this is sunflower and sesame oil. You should experiment which different oils and see which one fits you the best.

NEW PLANETS AROUND OUR SOLAR SYSTEM

The 32 new planets were found over the past five years using an instrument called a spectrograph at the European Southern Observatory in La Silla, Chile.

Known as HARPS, for High Accuracy Radial velocity Planetary Searcher, the spectrograph detects wobbles in a star's orbit caused by the pull of an unseen exoplanet.

The HARPS team selected stars like our sun, as well as lower-mass dwarf stars, to watch for wobbles.

Red dwarf stars were targets because they are dimmer, low-mass stars, which makes it easier to detect wobbles from low-mass satellite planets, said team member Nuno Santos, of the University of Porto, Portugal.

The 32 newfound exoplanets include several super-Earths, such as two planets no more than five times Earth's mass and two about six times Earth's mass, the Observatory of Geneva's Udry said.

The largest newly discovered exoplanet is a monster at seven to eight times Jupiter's mass, he estimated.

In addition, several Jupiter-mass planets were found around stars that don't have many metals.

Previous theories had stated that planets wouldn't tend to form around metal-poor stars, since planets are thought to take shape inside the metal-filled disks of debris left over from stellar birth.

The new finds suggest that astronomers might need to revise theories of planet formation—and may increase the number of possible star systems in the universe.

(Related: "Turbulence Key to Planet Formation, New Study Suggests.")

Exact details about each of the 32 new planets have yet to be published, Udry said, but "a bunch of the new planets will be described in the next six months."

PETRO CROPS -"Green Fuel"

The Planning Commission, Govt. of India, has launched an ambitious National Mission on Biodiesel to be implemented by a number of government agencies and coordinated by the Ministry of Rural Development. The Mission focuses on the cultivation of the physic nut, Jatropha curcas, a shrubby plant of the castor family. The seed contains 30-40% oil and can be mixed with diesel after trans-esterification. Initially Jatropha cultivation will be demonstrated on 0.4 m ha of wasteland area across the country. The entire cost economics is dependant on the productivity, quality and performance of the raw material. The Government is also discussing a National Biofuel Policy.

DBT has been entrusted through a micro-mission with the task of developing technologies that convert fiber, starch and sugar from woody plants and agricultural wastes into useful biofuel products. The thrust is on developing ethanol using lignocellulosic waste as raw material, identifying recombinant microbial stains for enhanced ethanol recovery, producing high quality raw material for biodiesel production and developing the enzymatic trans-esterfication process for more efficient conversion of oil to biodiesel. For the first time, a systematic scientific survey, characterization and collection of superior accessions of J.curcas from across the country has been taken up. More than 1500 accessions have been collected and characterized. Nurseries have been established at 12 locations for providing quality planting material to the National Mission. Nearly 0.8 million quality plantlets have been planted over an area of 300ha. A special focus is being given to crop improvement and on genes involved in oil biosynthesis. Other 'petro-crops' being investigated include Karanja (Pongamia pinnata), toothbrush tree (Salvadora persica) and Mahua (Madhuca indica)

With continued policy support and vigorous technology, biofuels could very soon be breathing new fire.

3LS-"AN OVERLAY NETWORK SIMULATOR"

3LS (3-Level-Simulator) is a Java based simulator for overlay
networks that uses a central step clock. The system is separated
into three models:
1. Networked

2. Protocol

3. User

The network model is described in terms of distance between nodes in
a 2D space. The protocol model is simply the P2P protocol being used.
The user model generates input from users using a GUI or file.
Communication can only be achieved between directly connected layers.

When running the simulator it is possible to either create the models
for each of the three described levels or to select existing models
from a library. As the simulation runs, each event is displayed on
the screen. Once completed, the simulation data is stored to a file
and this data is accessed by a visualisation tool named AiSee [15].
Currently, an implementation of Gnutella 0.4 exists and has been
tested on a small network of fewer than 20 nodes.

Download Simulator: Please e-mail the creators Nyik San Ting and
Ralph Deters at the University of Saskatchewan for a copy.

NS2-"PACKET LEVEL SIMULATOR"

NS2 developed at UC Berkeley, is a discrete event simulator
targeted at networking research and provides substantial support for
simulation of many Internet, routing, and multicast protocols. It can
be installed on both Windows (using Cygwin) and Linux but evidently
is more suited to Linux. NS2 is comprised of many various packages to
provide its features (e.g. compatibility with numerous protocols and
providing graphical representation of simulations etc) thus is
notoriously difficult to use.

NS2 implements a vast array of protocols including TCP and UDP,
traffic source behavior such as FTP, Telnet, VBR and CBR.
Additionally, there is router queue management mechanisms such as
Drop Tail, RED and CBQ implemented. NS2 also implements multicasting
and some of the MAC layer protocols for LAN simulations. Currently,
there is only one P2P simulation available for NS2 (Gnutella).
Simulations in NS2 are constructed using a mixture of C++ and OTcl
(Object Orientated version of Tcl created by MIT).

Simulating in NS2 is a four step model.

1. Firstly, add a combination of C++ and OTcl code to the NS2 standard
set of libraries to implement your protocol.

2. Create the simulated network using an OTcl script (define the
nodes, links etc).

3. Run the generated scripts.

4. Analyze the trace files generated by NS2. A graphical model (NAM)
can use the trace files to show a graphical representation of the
simulation. Other tools available include graph plotting.

Due to the realistic nature of the packet level NS2 simulator,
scalability is a major issue. However, like most packet level
simulators NS2 can run in parallel with a number of other machines.
This can increase the maximum number of nodes for a given simulation
but can become difficult to manage. Subsequently, NS2 is commonly
used for simulating small networks and is generally unsuitable for
modelling overlay networks.

NALLAMALA-"UNDISTURBED FOREST"

The 1,000sqkm Nallamala area is probably the largest stretch of undisturbed forests in south India other than the Western Ghats.

It is considered one of toughest and the most treacherous terrains. Even those well-aware of the tracks can get lost.

Little wonder, the Maoists have made Nallamala — spread across five districts of Kurnool, Mahbubnagar, Prakasam, Guntur and Nalgonda — their haven. The Maoists ruled this region for over a decade by camping in the deep forests and troubled successive governments by unleashing a wave of terror. They ran a parallel government in these five districts taking full advantage of the terrain.

The fissured rocks prevent any water from percolating, resulting in most of the discharge running off as mountain streams to join the Gundlakamma river in the hills.

The Krishna river, which flows majestically through the forests, separates Kurnool and Mahbubnagar districts, while the Srisailam reservoir backwaters are spread across a length of 70 km making it easy for the Maoists to escape.

NALLAMALA - "TIGER HABITAT"

Nallamala is a range of parallel hills and valleys of the Eastern Ghats in eastern Andhra Pradesh state, southern India. Located south of the Krishna River, the hills run north to south, parallel to the Coromandel Coast on the Bay of Bengal. Their total length is about 265 miles (430 km); the northern boundary is in the Palnad Basin, and the southern boundary is in the Tirupati Hills. Approximately 19 miles (31 km) wide, the Nallamala Range rises to an average elevation of 2,900 to 3,600 feet (900 to 1,100 metres). The rugged, sparsely populated hills are composed for the most part of jumbled quartzites and slates and exemplify the mountain scenery of the Eastern Ghats.

ALL ABOUT BIO-DIESEL

Bio-diesel is the name of a clean burning alternative fuel, produced from domestic, renewable resources. Bio-diesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a bio-diesel blend. It can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines with little or no modifications. Bio-diesel is simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics.

How is bio-diesel made?

Bio-diesel is made through a chemical process called transesterification whereby the glycerin is separated from the fat or vegetable oil. The process leaves behind two products -- methyl esters (the chemical name for bio-diesel) and glycerin (a valuable byproduct usually sold to be used in soaps and other products).

Is Bio-diesel the same thing as raw vegetable oil?

No! Fuel-grade bio-diesel must be produced to strict industry specifications (ASTM D6751) in order to insure proper performance. Bio-diesel is the only alternative fuel to have fully completed the health effects testing requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. Bio-diesel that meets ASTM D6751 and is legally registered with the Environmental Protection Agency is a legal motor fuel for sale and distribution. Raw vegetable oil cannot meet bio-diesel fuel specifications, it is not registered with the EPA, and it is not a legal motor fuel.

For entities seeking to adopt a definition of bio-diesel for purposes such as federal or state statute, state or national divisions of weights and measures, or for any other purpose, the official definition consistent with other federal and state laws and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) guidelines is as follows:

Bio-diesel is defined as mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats which conform to ASTM D6751 specifications for use in diesel engines. Bio-diesel refers to the pure fuel before blending with diesel fuel. Bio-diesel blends are denoted as, "BXX" with "XX" representing the percentage of bio-diesel contained in the blend (ie: B20 is 20% bio-diesel, 80% petroleum diesel).

Harmful Effects of Petrol

Since ancient times, people have inhaled the fumes of different chemicals like incense, oils, resins, burning spices and perfumes to alter consciousness or as part of religious ceremonies. The first report of people sniffing petrol to get 'high' was in the US in 1934. After that people realised they could also get high from sniffing all sorts of household products that contained volatile fumes: glue, aerosols, chrome – based paint, paint thinner, cleaning fluids and lighter fluids.

Petrol sniffing is a form of substance misuse. Petrol sniffers deliberately inhale the petrol fumes given off for the intoxicating effect. They hold a saturated cloth over their nose and mouth or sniff directly from a small container. Intoxication can be rapid, within one to five minutes. Depending on the method, the effects may last for minutes or several hours. Young people also sniff other substances such as glue, photocopier fluid, aerosols, paint thinner, cleaning and lighter fluids.

People inhale through the mouth or nose using either a cloth soaked in petrol or a small container filled with petrol. Petrol goes from the lungs to the bloodstream and then into the brain. There it slows down brain activity and depresses the central nervous system in a similar way to alcohol. Within seconds the person can feel euphoric, relaxed, dizzy, numb and light. They may also experience:

hallucinations
aggression
increased libido
hunger
lack of coordination, staggering
disorientation
slurred speech
coughing, wheezing
vomiting
slow reflexes
They may look like someone who is drunk on alcohol but act a bit more strangely. Sometimes you can smell the strong odour of petrol on them. These effects can last up to an hour, and longer if they keep sniffing. In serious cases people may have fits.

It is possible to die from sniffing the first time because the petrol is taking the place of oxygen in the blood and not enough oxygen is being taken to the brain. People have died this way from sniffing with a jumper or blanket around their head because it stops oxygen getting to the lungs.

People have died from doing exercise like running or playing football straight after sniffing. The combined stress of sniffing and exercise put too much pressure on the heart.

Many people who sniff have suffered serious burns or death because the petrol caught fire. Sniffing around any flames or fire is very dangerous.

Papaya Juice - Cure for Dengue

I would like to share this interesting discovery from my friend who has just recovered from dengue fever. Apparently, he was in the critical stage at the ICU when his blood platelet count drops to 15 after ! 15 liters of blood transfusion.
He was so worried that he seeked another friend's recommendation and he was saved. He confessed to me that he was given raw juice of the papaya leaves. From a platelet count of 45 after 20 liters of blood transfusion, and after drinking the raw papaya leaf juice, his platelet count jumps instantly to 135. Even the doctors and nurses were surprised. After the second day he was discharged. So he asked me to pass this good news around.
Accordingly it is raw papaya leaves, 2pcs just cleaned and pound and squeeze with filter cloth. You will only get one tablespoon per leaf. So two! Tablespoon per serving once a day. Do not boil or cook or rinse with hot water, it will loose its strength. Only the leafy part and no stem or sap. It is very bitter and you have to swallow it like "Won Low Kat". But it works.
You may have heard this elsewhere but if not, I am glad to inform you that papaya juice is a natural cure for dengue fever. As dengue fever is rampant now, I think it's good to share this with all.
A friend of mine had dengue last year. It was a very serious situation for her as her platelet count had dropped to 28,000 after 3 days in hospital and water has started to fill up her lung. She had difficulty in breathing. She was only 32-year old. Doctor says there's no cure for dengue. We just have to wait for her body immune system to build up resistance against dengue and fight its own battle. She ! already had 2 blood transfusion and all of us were praying very hard as her platelet continued to drop since the first day she was admitted.
Fortunately her mother-in-law heard that papaya juice would help to reduce the fever and got some papaya leaves, pounded them and squeeze the juice out for it. The next day, her platelet count started to increase, her fever subsided. We continued to feed her with papaya juice and she recovered after 3 days!!!
Amazing but it's true. It's believed one's body would be overheated when one is down with dengue and that also caused the patient to have fever. Papaya juice has cooling effect. Thus, it helps to reduce the level of heat in one's body, thus the fever will go away. I found that it's also good when one is having sore throat or suffering from heat.
Please spread the news about this as lately there are many dengue cases. It's great if such natural cure could help to ease the sufferings of dengue patients.
Furthermore it's so easily available.
Blend them, squeeze the juice, drink immediately! It's simple and miraculously effective!!

Petrol from natural gas

Petrol, mixture of the lighter liquid hydrocarbons used chiefly as a fuel for internal-combustion engines. It is produced by the fractional distillation of petroleum oil; by condensation or adsorption from natural gas; by thermal or catalytic decomposition of petroleum or its fractions; by the hydrogenation of producer gas or coal; or by the polymerization of hydrocarbons of lower molecular weight.

Petrol (known in the United States as gasoline) can be produced by the direct distillation of crude petroleum, when it is known as straight-run petrol. It is usually distilled continuously in a bubble tower (see Distillation), which separates the fractions of the oil that will be blended to become petrol from those having higher boiling points, which are blended to form products such as kerosene, fuel oil, lubricating oil, and grease. The range of temperatures in which fractions suitable for petrol boil and are distilled off is roughly between 38° C to 205° C (100° F to 400° F). The yield of petrol from this process varies from about 1 per cent to about 50 per cent, depending on the oil. Straight-run petrol now makes up only a small part of petrol production because of the superior merits of the various cracking processes.

Some natural gas contains a percentage of natural petrol that may be recovered by condensation or adsorption. The most common process for the extraction of this component includes passing the gas as it comes from the well through a series of towers containing a light oil called straw oil. The oil absorbs the petrol, which is then distilled off. Other processes involve adsorption of the petrol on activated alumina, activated carbon, or silica gel.

High-grade petrol can be produced by a process known as hydrofining, that is, the hydrogenation of refined petroleum oils under high pressure in the presence of a catalyst such as molybdenum oxide. Hydrofining not only converts oils of low value into petrol of higher value but at the same time purifies the product chemically by removing undesirable elements such as sulphur. Producer gas, coal, and coal-tar distillates can also be hydrogenated to form petrol.

For use in high-compression engines, it is desirable to produce petrol that will burn evenly and completely in order to prevent knocking, which is the noise and damage caused by premature ignition of a part of the fuel and air charge in the combustion chamber. The antiknock characteristics of a petrol are directly related to its efficiency and are indicated by its octane number. This is a rating that describes the performance of a fuel in comparison with that of a standard fuel containing given percentages of isooctane and heptane. The octane number given to the fuel is the same as the percentage of isooctane in the standard fuel of the same performance. The higher this number, the less likely a fuel is to cause knocking. Cracked petrol has better antiknock characteristics than straight-run petrol, and any petrol can be further improved by the addition of such substances as tetraethyl or tetramethyl lead. Since it was discovered, however, that the emission of lead from such petrols is dangerous to human beings—among other effects, raising blood pressure—research on new ways to reduce the knocking characteristics of petrol was intensified.

Low-lead petrols were introduced in the early 1970s as a result of increased public concern about air pollution, and cars were increasingly equipped with catalytic converters to reduce their emission of pollutants. Because even low-lead petrol “poisons” the catalyst, the proportion of leaded petrol in the United States declined from 73 per cent of the total supply in 1976 to less than 10 per cent by 1990. European countries moved more slowly in this direction, largely by placing extra taxes on leaded petrol. Many environmentalists called for much-increased use of gasohol and cleaner-burning natural gas in the late 1990s. However, there was widespread concern over alternative biofuels' impact on global warming and they came to be considered partly responsible for sharp food price increases experienced worldwide towards the close of the first decade of the 21st century.

A Perfect Solution to petrol crisis

It looks like petrol won't be budging from the $1.20 mark any time soon. Society has to seriously start looking at alternative forms of fuel and transport. In this spirit, I've come up with a great idea: chariots. Sydneysiders should be made to ride horse-drawn chariots to work. Sure, everyone will turn up hours late, but imagine the fun. It'll be like living in Ben-Hur.

Of course, there will be a period of adjustment. We'll have to knock down multilevel car parks and rebuild them as high-rise stables. Roads will have to be fixed to deal with the new horse traffic. Forget about paying the e-toll - there'll be "neigh" tolls. Petrol stations will become hay stations selling bales of hay, green apples and cubes of sugar.

Mechanics will be replaced by blacksmiths, who will continue the tradition of their mechanic forefathers by being sexist and overcharging for a simple horseshoe replacement. Road signs will be changed to reflect the new horse traffic. Stop signs will read "whoa, neddy". Go signs will read "yah! yah!", complete with a picture of a man using a whip on a nag. Speed limits will be abolished. Single horse and buggies will be the new Volvos. Men going through mid-life crises will buy Porsche chariots. Idiots or those trying to be wittily ironic will hang fluffy dice on their horses' blinkers. People will put stickers on the backs of their chariots that read, "My other horse is a stallion
Road rage will be replaced by whip rage, with riders laying into each other over real or imagined slights. The menaces on the road won't be four-wheel-drives, they'll be four-horse chariots, driven by Mosman mothers picking up their children from school. Public transport might be a problem. If people are angry about trains being 10 minutes late, they're likely to be even angrier when their 100-seat superchariot arrives 10 hours late.

The other drawback is that there will be manure everywhere. But no revolution is without hardship.

Ferries will become galleons. No one will dare complain about the ferries being late - they'll be too worried about pirates periodically raiding them.

On the plus side, you'll never have to worry about losing your car keys again.

Petrol from Plastic waste-"A Project developed by velammal engineering students"

With Pondicherry generating a high volume of plastic waste, the government owned Pondicherry Agro Services and Industries Corporation (PASIC) has hit upon a plan to generate petrol from the waste.

The Microbiology wing in the Corporation in collaboration with the management of Chennai-based Velammal Engineering College has mobilised technical and other expertise for the production of petrol from plastic waste.

A team from the college (attached to the department of Chemistry) headed by D. Sivaraj and his students held a demonstration in the presence of the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, on the premises of PASIC recently to show how petrol and other fuel could be generated from the used plastic materials.
R Dayalan the microbiologists in PASIC said that Pondicherry was generating 300 tons of solid waste daily in which plastic wastes comprised 30 per cent.

Twin benefits
By generating the fuel the project would help solve the problem of environmental pollution due to plastics and provide an alternative fuel source. Disposal of plastic wastes was a problem facing environmentalists and the policy makers. But the innovative plan to produce petrol and allied fuel was a step in the direction of cashing in on the pollutant itself.
It was felt that if a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the college for further intensified efforts to realise the establishment of the plant there could be perceptible development to generate petrol, save foreign exchange and also enjoy allied benefits.

It would be only a recycling process to generate `wealth from waste',

The demonstration was witnessed among others by the Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam, Local Administration, A. Elumalai, the chairman of PASIC, R. Kamalakannan, the Managing Director of the corporation, Natarajan, officials of the corporation and the academics from local technical and non technical institutions.

A clean and self-sustained Pondicherry could be achieved by converting plastic waste into fuel and generation of power could also be the spin off effect.

Gasohol-"A Substitute to Petrol"

Gasohol, a blend of nine parts unleaded petrol and one part alcohol (ethanol or methanol), used extensively in some countries to reduce the cost of petrol as motor fuel. Raw materials for methanol production are coal and organic wastes, especially waste-wood products, while ethanol may be distilled from grain, sugar crops, or almost any starchy plant. Although in most of the world in the early 1980s it remained more expensive than petrol, gasohol is derived from renewable sources.

Alcohol was used interchangeably with petrol in the first internal-combustion engines in the 1870s, and petrol-alcohol blends have been used periodically in Europe when oil was in short supply. Two petrol-alcohol blends, alcoline and agrol, were sold in the United States in the 1930s but were unable to compete successfully with low-cost petrol. The oil shortages of the 1970s prompted a revival of interest in alcohol blends, an interest further increased after 1985 by restrictions on leaded petrol. Gasohol can be used without modifying the carburettor, ignition timing, or fuel lines of a car, and has a slightly higher octane rating than ordinary unleaded regular petrol.

Petrol from Bacteria - "Future petrol"

Those nasty tummy bugs caused by the presence of a common bacteria E.coli, may turn out to have a good side, because this diarrhoea causing bug may become the fuel of the future.

According to American scientists working at the University of California (UCLA) E.coli can be used to make alcohol that is as much as 300% more efficient than the ethanol additives currently in use.

The scientists have managed to genetically alter the E.coli so that it is able to produce something called “long-chain alcohol” which is highly suited for use in aircraft propulsion.

It is also thought that it could be added to many other fuels including basic petrol and diesel.

The huge advantage is that bacteria grow at a rate that does not even compare to regular plants used for producing biofuel.

They reproduce astonishingly quickly as we all know. After eating food contaminated with E.coli we can become sick within a few hours.

It is hoped that the new additive will be added to corn and other food based biofuels to give a much needed boost to the fuels’ efficiency.

Michael Jackson the "KING OF POP" is no more

Michael Jackson, defined in equal parts as the world's greatest entertainer and perhaps its most enigmatic figure, was about to attempt one of the greatest comebacks of all time. Then his life was cut shockingly — and so far, mysteriously — short.

The 50-year-old musical superstar died Thursday, just as he was preparing for what would be a series of 50 concerts starting July 13 at London's famed 02 arena. Jackson had been spending hours and hours toiling with a team of dancers for a performance he and his fans hoped would restore his tarnished legacy to its proper place in pop.

An autopsy was planned for Friday, though results were not likely to be final until toxicology tests could be completed, a process that could take several days and maybe weeks. However, if a cause can be determined by the autopsy, the results will be announced, said Los Angeles County Coroner Investigator Jerry McKibben.

Police said they were investigating, standard procedure in high-profile cases.

Jackson died at UCLA Medical Center after being stricken at his rented home in the posh Los Angeles neighborhood of Holmby Hills. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at his home for nearly three-quarters of an hour, then rushed him to the hospital, where doctors continued to work on him.

"It is believed he suffered cardiac arrest in his home. However, the cause of his death is unknown until results of the autopsy are known," his brother Jermaine said.

Cardiac arrest is an abnormal heart rhythm that stops the heart from pumping blood to the body. It can occur after a heart attack or be caused by other heart problems.

Aberdeen university unearths oil

The specific area of the Faroe-Shetland basin where research will be carried out is one of the world’s largest lava fields. The ancient lavas that sit under the sea surface in what was a narrow continental seaway have historically proven to be a serious obstacle to oil exploration for potential resources below and within the lavas. The technology that will be employed by experts at Aberdeen University, Scotland, is able to penetrate this layer of lava in a way that has never been trialled before.
Exploiting the previously untapped oil resources which lie within the Faroe-Shetland basin essentially means the introduction to the industry of an entirely new geographical area for future oil discovery and therefore production. This would mean a highly significant boost for the overall sector and, in particular the Aberdeen area, as the energy capital of Europe.
The geological qualities of the Faroe-Shetland basin make it an internationally significant hotspot for volcanic lava.A layer of lava some three kilometres thick covering an area of 300 square kilometres acts as a seal, trapping sand and mud - the sediment where oil can be found - between and beneath its flows. The thickness of the lava means that traditional techniques employed for oil exploration in, for example, the North Sea, simply do not work. They will be introducing cutting-edge technology which will allow mapping of sediments between the lava flows and the identification of oil reservoirs.

EROS ASTEROID-facts

Eros is moon sized asteroid. However, the very first image of Eros from orbit, seems to show a linear track starting randomly on the asteroid’s surface, then climbing up the outside wall of a crater, running down the inside wall, ending at a 50-meter boulder near the crater center.Since that initial picture, dozens of additional trails, boulders, and trails ending in boulders have been found on the surface of Eros. Surprised planetary astronomers are now theorizing about boulders ejected from the interior of Eros during collision events.
To his considerable credit, planetary astronomer Andrew Cheng, presented evidence that Eros originated from “probably a planet-sized body that once broke up”. but that the current opinion of most astronomers is that it was Moon-sized or smaller. This evidence for a large parent body for Eros includes:
Geological layering, which could not have been created directly on the asteroid because its escape velocity is so low, and material from any impact big enough to create layers would therefore escape. Diversity of composition, showing major spectral differences over the surface, and even within single craters. Evidence of chemical differentiation, which implies near-total melting sometime in the past with consequent separation of heavy and light elements by gravitational sorting – things usually associated with planets. Solidness implied by the density, as contrasted with the sort of rubble pile expected for an object formed by repeated impacts.

Poor aerobic fitness linked to fatty liver disease

A new study has linked low aerobic capacity to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and suggested that the resulting liver problems play a crucial step developing obesity-related illnesses.

Poor aerobic fitness is already strongly associated with obesity and its consequent risks of heart disease, strokes and diabetes.

But in case of NAFLD, sufferers accumulate fat in their livers and have high levels of fat in their blood, amplifying the risk factors of obesity.

The disease leads to a form of liver damage called fibrosis, similar to the results of alcohol abuse.

"Fatty liver disease will be the next big metabolic disorder associated with obesity and inactivity. It also is a significant contributor to type 2 diabetes," said the study's lead author John Thyfault of the University of Missouri.

In order to test the link between fitness and fatty liver disease, the researchers selectively bred two groups of rats with very different levels of intrinsic aerobic capacity.

After 17 generations of careful breeding, the "unfit" rats could run an average of just 200m compared to over 1500m achieved by the average 'fit' rat.

However, the researchers saw that the effect on the rats' livers was devastating.

At 25 weeks old, the unfit group were displaying clear symptoms of NAFLD - weakened mitochondria (the cell's powerhouses), poor fat processing power, high fat retention and other abnormalities.

By the end of their natural lives, the rats' livers had sustained damage, including fibrosis (the precursor to cirrhosis) and unexpected cell death.

On the other hand, the 'fit' group enjoyed healthy livers throughout their lifespans - despite the fact that neither group was getting any real exercise.

The team's findings provide the first biochemical links between low aerobic fitness and fatty liver disease, and thus the authors have suggested that NAFLD could potentially be treated or prevented by a suitable exercise program.

The study has been published in The Journal of Physiology. (ANI)

Cow farts for global warming study

Researchers from Argentina were surprised to find that a single 550-kg cow produces between 800 to 1,000 liters of emissions each day.
Argentina has more than 55 million cows, making it a leading producer of beef. In the study, the scientists were surprised to discover that a standard 550-kg cow produces between 800 to 1,000 liters of emissions, including methane, each day.

Further, methane - which is also released from landfills, coal mines and leaking gas pipes - is 23 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere.

"When we got the first results, we were surprised," said Guillermo Berra, a researcher at the National Institute of Agricultural Technology in Argentina. "Thirty percent of Argentina´s (total greenhouse) emissions could be generated by cattle."

In their study, the researchers attached balloon-like plastic packs to the backs of at least 10 cows. A tube running to the animals´ stomachs collected the gas inside the backpacks, which were then hung from the roof of the corral for analysis.

GREEN PETROL-say gud bye to petrol crisis

Scientists at University of Massachusetts-Amherst in the US have announced the creation of petrol from plant matter, with almost no carbon footprint. The “green petrol” – as the researchers describe it – is identical to standard petrol, yet created from sustainable biomass sources like switchgrass. It may take five to 10 years for the green petrol to arrive at the pump or find its way into a fighter jet, his team’s work has bypassed significant hurdles to bringing green petrol biofuels to market. It is likely that the future consumer will not even know that they are putting biofuels into their car. Biofuels in the future will most likely be similar in chemical composition to petrol and diesel fuel used today. The challenge for chemical engineers is to efficiently produce liquid fuels from biomass while fitting into the existing infrastructure today. For thIS new approach, the researchers rapidly heated cellulose in the presence of solid catalysts – materials that speed up reactions without sacrificing themselves in the process – and then rapidly cooled the products to create a liquid that contains many of the compounds found in petrol. The entire process was completed in about two minutes using relatively moderate amounts of heat, said the researchers. According to them, the compounds that formed in that single step, like naphthalene and toluene, make up one fourth of the suite of chemicals found in petrol. The liquid can be further treated to form the remaining fuel components or can be used “as is” for a high-octane petrol blend, they add. “Green petrol is an attractive alternative to bioethanol since it can be used in existing engines. In theory it requires much less energy to make than ethanol, giving it a smaller carbon footprint and making it cheaper to produce.Thos method does not require any external energy. In fact, from the extra heat that will be released, you can generate electricity in addition to the biofuel. There will not be just a small carbon footprint for the process; by recovering heat and generating electricity, there won’t be any footprint. They are now working with a host of leaders from academia, industry and government to make green petrol a practical solution for the impending fuel crisis. Scientists are currently working on understanding the chemistry of this process and designing new catalysts and reactors for this single step technique. This fundamental chemical understanding will allow us to design more efficient processes that will accelerate the commercialisation of green petrol.

CULTIVATING DIESEL-JATROPHA SHRUBS

Jatropha is a valuable multi-purpose crop to alleviate soil degradation, desertification and deforestation, which can be used for bio-energy to replace petro-diesel, for soap production and climatic protection, and hence deserves specific attention .

USES OF JATROPHA:
a)Currently the oil from Jatropha curcas seeds is used for making biodiesel fuel in Philippines.
b)Biodiesel produced from jatropha is one of the most promising solutions for tackling the growing carbon emissions from transport.
c)Jatropha podagrica or buddha belly plant or bottleplant shrub was used to tan leather and produce a red dye in Mexico and the Southwestern United States. It is also used as a house plant.
d)Jatropha cuneata limberbush, whose stems are used for basketmaking by the Seri people in Sonora.
e)Jatropha curcas, also known as physic nut, is used to produce the non-edible Jatropha oil, for making candles and soap, and as a feedstock for producing bio-diesel.

NEW QUASAR-California-Santa Cruz astronomers rockzz

Quasars are enormously bright cores of very distant galaxies thought to contain “super-massive” black holes a billion times larger than our sun. They are seen only in the centers of very distant galaxies that formed long ago .University of California-Santa Cruz astronomers are the first to discover the onset of a huge flow of gas from a quasar, or the super-bright core of an extremely remote young galaxy still being formed. The gas was expelled from the quasar and its enormous black hole sometime in the space of four years around 10 billion years ago – an extremely brief and ancient blip noticed only by a sharp-eyed undergraduate and the unlikely convergence of two separate observational efforts.

Bagalight Table Lamp

This is one of those gadgets that I kind of wish they were kidding, sadly, they aren’t. If anyone were to see this on your table, they’d likely think you had a small child that made an attempt at some arts and crafts one afternoon. Although despite the fact that it does look a bit ugly, it is said to be an eco-friendly table light. Actually the people at Liquidesign wanted to come up with an eco-friendly light and that’s how they came up with the idea for this lamp.

The bag is part of an entire series of lighting. Within that series is a pendant light as well, that is made from card and paper, as is the lamp shown here. You can also pick up their desk lamp version of the light. Hopefully the desk lamp version does actually point light directly at your desk. It’s always nice to have eco-friendly lighting. However, it being eco-friendly doesn’t exactly give the designers a free pass to stop caring about the look of the overall design. You can purchase this Bagalight for £29.99 or about $43

BLOGGER PLANT-"midori-san" the first green blogger

A potted plant named "midori-san" is proved to b the first green blogger. This succulent "sweet heart plant" contains bio-electrical sensors that translates the signal given by the plant into japanese language script using an efficient computer algorithm.

So far, the plant’s highly structured posts summarize the day’s weather, temperature and lighting conditions, describe its overall physical condition, tell how much light it received via the user-activated lamp (see below), and explain how much fun the day was.

The recent post by this green blogger is as follows:
"Today was a sunny day and I was able to sunbathe a lot. I had quite a bit of fun today."
"It was cloudy today. It was a cold day."

CAMERA PILLS*****SAY GUDBYE TO SURGERY*****

A swallowable camera, little bigger than a normal pill, can snap pictures as it floats through the stomach and intestine, offering a less invasive way to perform diagnosis than an endoscope or surgery. The pills are used on patients who typically have internal bleeding or abdominal pain that is hard to diagnose. Up until now doctors have used an endoscope – a camera on a flexible tube – to examine such problems. However much of the small intestine, which is tightly coiled and stretches for up to 6 meters, could not be reached using this method and the only alternative was for patients to swallow barium and have an X-ray which produced poor quality images. Now the camera pill allows the doctors a near perfect view of the inside of this organ as it makes its way through a patient's body.

WORKING:
The pill is similar to a digital camera and sends 50,000 still images from along its journey to a small recorder device worn on the patient's belt. After eight hours the doctors take the recorder and download it onto a computer before watching the footage to see if there are any signs of bleeding, disease or swelling. If a concerning area is found then dedicated treatment can be taken to combat the problem.
Patients having the pill, which cost less than £400 each, must fast the day before but can leave the hospital and go to work as normal while the pill is in their body. The whole process takes just a day and patients will generally be given the results within a few days.

PATIENTS EXPERIENCE:
One patient to benefit was BRITNEY , 28, of Texas, who has suffered from severe abdominal pain for three years. For most of that time doctors were unable to diagnose what was the cause was, and it was only through the use of the camera pill that a firm diagnosis was possible. When the pain first started it would last a couple of days and was bearable but by the end it was really bad and I was doubled over in agony unable to do anything. It was very frustrating that no one was able to diagnose what the problem was.

I was referred to Dr John last year and when he suggested the camera pill I thought it sounded strange but just said 'let's do it'. It is quite a big pill but ok to swallow and I didn't feel anything as it passed through me. One of the nurses allowed me to watch the live images which was quite amusing.A few days later Dr John said the footage proved without doubt that I had Crohn's Disease which is like an inflamed gut. It was such a relief to finally have a diagnosis. It is a very cool piece of equipment. I've had nearly every test available but this was the best and also the least invasive. Also because it showed exactly where it was in my intestine they were able to decide which medication was most suitable. I still have a lot of pain but at least we know what we are dealing with now and the steps to control it.
